Photography

Other than music, the only thing I really consider as a pursuit of mine is photography. My parents forced me into visual arts when I was a kid, sending me to drawing lessons and having me sketch still life for hours. I could never stick to it, though, and I ended up spending those hours staring listlessly at the subject, drawing a few strokes every 10 minutes, and then staring at it again for another spell. Eventually, I found the courage to tell my parents I didn't like it and quit. I enjoyed and performed much better in music, so I thought that maybe that was what I was made for and turned away from the visual arts altogether. I never expected to return.

However, somewhere in the course of my university career, I found a passion for photography. I started with a point and shoot digital camera, primarily to grab snapshots of my life, but now it's at the least a full-blown hobby, and on some days, it's an obsessive art. I think that photography, in many ways, is underestimated and under-appreciated. After all, what's so hard about taking a picture? Millions of people do it every day. However, I draw a distinction between simple snapshots, and real photography. Despite this distinction, though, I have to admit that much of my photography still sits on the border between the two. I'm impressed everyday by how difficult it is to truly master the art of capturing light. Learning how to simply get a good exposure is one thing; having exposure work for you as a tool and using it as a vehicle of artistic expression...well, that's an entirely different animal altogether.

For those of you who have been here before, you'll notice that this area has changed a bit, and most notably, I've added a gallery of my photos. I gladly share my work with you; my only request is that you ask for my permission before you use any of it, link it, or modify it. I have no issue with you guys using the photos for personal viewing purposes, and I'm not charging money (yet =P), but I just want to know what happens with my photos. To some, these may just be pictures; to me, they are a fruit of my labour, and I've invested a lot of time, money, and myself in this, and I want to protect the integrity of my work. It's kind of like how when someone writes a song and someone else does a cover of it, they give credit and ask for permission. It's just an act of courtesy.

Well, enough of the lecture. The bottom line is I love photography, and I'm glad I can share some of it with you. Feel free to explore the gallery and take advantage of all the features available, like leaving comments; I like having feedback on what you guys think. When it comes to photography, I love talking shop, whether it's about the technology available, the technicalities of a good exposure, or the more touchy-feely artsy side of things, as I'm sure many of you can attest to. If you share my interest in photography, please feel free to contact me.

Enjoy!
